    Overview
    Abstract
The Dodowa Health and Demographic Surveillance System (DHDSS) operates in the south-eastern part of Ghana. It was established in 2005 after an initial attempt in 2003 by the Dodowa Health Research Centre (DHRC) to have an accurate population base for piloting a community health insurance scheme.

The surveillance area of 1,528.9 sq km currently covers two districts in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana namely the Shai-Osudoku and Ningo-Prampram. These two districts were until 2012 one district .

As at 2012, the DHDSS had registered 115, 754 residents in 23 647 households. The district is fairly rural, with scattered settlements. Information on pregnancies, births, deaths, migration and marriages using household registration books administered by trained fieldworkers is obtained biannually. Education, immunization status and household socioeconomic measures are obtained annually and verbal autopsies (VA) are conducted on all deaths. Community key informants (CKI) complement the work of field staff by notifying the field office of events that occur after a fieldworker has left a community.

The centre has very close working relationships with the district health directorate and the local government authority.

The DHDSS subscribes to the INDEPTH data-sharing policy and in addition, contractual arrangements are made with various institutions on specific data-sharing issues.

The Dodowa HDSS operates within the boundaries of the Shai-Osudoku and Ningo-Prampram districts, formerly the Dangme West district. It is one of 10 districts in the Greater Accra Region located in the south-eastern part of Ghana and lies between latitude 5° 45' south and 6° 05' north and longitude 0° 05' east and 0° 20' west. With a land area of 1528.9 sq km, the district covers about 41.5% of the Region. It is about 41 km from the national capital, Accra.

    Universe
Resident household members of househlds resident within the demographic surveillance area. Inmigrants are defineed by intention to become resident but actual residence episodes of less than 3 months is censored, Outmigrants are defined by intention to become resident elsewhere, but actual period of non-residence less than 3 months are censored.

Children born to resident woemen are considered resident by default, irrespective of actual place birth.

The dateset contains the events of all individuals ever resident during the study period (Jan 2006-Dec 2015)
